An impeller on a boat circulates untreated water into a marine engine's cooling system from the outside (source). For sterndrives and outboards, the impeller is in the bottom unit; for inboards, it is on the engine. If the fins of a boat impeller are bent, fractured, melted, or worn out, it needs to be changed. Impellers should be replaced every 300 hours or three years by marine engine manufacturers, it should undergo an annual inspection. Every 300 hours, you might also need to replace the water pump housing. It secures your impeller in position.
