Allows the engine to breathe in its most basic form. The engine marine is essentially a giant air pump, and the better the pump does at taking in and exchanging air, the better the automobile will travel. The sound of "spitting" from the engine compartment is an indication that your exhaust manifold is leaking, particularly when the engine is revving hard or ascending a hill. As a result of a leak, your marine engine loses power since the exhaust stream is slower. As a result of a vacuum created by the exhaust scavenging manifold design and the gasket's seal, more of the air/gas mixture is pulled into the manifold by the manifold design and gasket seal.
