Propeller shaft seals allow the propeller shaft to exit the boat and rotate while keeping the water out. The shaft seal additionally lubricates the shaft as it leaves the vessel (much like a stuffing box). A housing with O ring lip seals and/or face seals makes up the propeller shaft seals. Face seals and lip seals are the two basic types of seals. Both versions employ an articulated rubber sleeve to keep the water out, while face seals use a collar fastened to the shaft that bears against a surface on the articulated hose's end. On the contact between the stainless and the carbon, a small amount of water develops, lubricating the seal.
